frozen heart

My heart could be softer,
kinder,
quieter while it beats heavily in
my chest.
but the throbbing,
ice-coated organ
beats with every pain
against my rib cage.
it may be frozen,
slowly thawing with every
brush of your lips against mine,
but I never meant for it to harden.
I wish you met me before the
frost began to set like the morning
winter ground.
every opportunity to thaw
comes and goes like the summer sun.
your hands in mine,
your body wrapped around my own.
it may take a fortnight
or a unnerving century
to get the frozen glass caging
my heart to disintegrate.
but bare with me,
warm and loving.
